Scholarship Application Deadline Extended
The application deadline for scholarships for multidisciplinary teams to participate in the National Professional Training Conference on Responding to Crime Victims with Disabilities, to be held September 30–October 2, 2009, in Denver, Colorado, has been extended to July 1, 2009.
A limited number of scholarships of up to $5,000 are available as reimbursable funds for conference registration, travel, lodging, and food. A team must be comprised of at least one representative each from victim services, disability services, and law enforcement. In addition, participation by practitioners and advocates with disabilities who have been victims of crime is strongly encouraged.
Team scholarships encourage individuals from diverse organizations and disciplines to engage in the professional development, collaboration, and planning afforded by the conference in order to address the unique needs of crime victims with disabilities in their communities. OVC E-Publication Wins NAGC Gold Screen Award
OVC is pleased to announce that its online publication, Implementing SANE Programs in Rural Communities: The West Virginia Regional Mobile SANE Project, won the 2009 National Association of Government Communicators (NAGC) Gold Screen Award for Second Place in the Electronic Publications category.
The Mobile SANE replication guide highlights an OVC-funded demonstration project from the West Virginia Foundation for Rape Information and Services, which sought to use on-call sexual assault nurse examiners (SANE) to serve hospitals throughout a four-county region in a rural area of West Virginia. It describes the project planning and implementation process and includes access to materials developed during implementation.
NAGC is a national nonprofit professional network of federal, state, and local government employees who disseminate information within and outside government. Awards of Excellence recognize government agencies and individuals for significant publication achievement, and underscore the Association's high standards of professionalism in public service.

OVC Announces Fall 2009 Training Workshops
OVC is pleased to offer specialized training workshops to enhance your capacity to better serve crime victims. The 2009 Fall Training Schedule features popular established workshops such as Compassion Fatigue/Vicarious Trauma (September 2–3, 2009), and Enforcing Victims’ Rights (September 29–30, 2009), as well as a new workshop, Identifying and Responding to Elder Abuse (November 18–19, 2009).

NCVLI to Host Crime Victim Law & Litigation Conference
The National Crime Victim Law Institute’s (NCVLI) eighth annual Crime Victim Law & Litigation Conference: The Path to Progress will be held June 30–July 1, 2009, in Portland, Oregon.
This OVC-supported event is specifically designed for attorneys, advocates, law students, and other criminal justice professionals to meet, network, and increase their knowledge of crime victim law and victims' rights. More than 20 educational and training workshops will be offered on topics related to crime victim law and victim advocacy, such as:
- American Indian crime victims’ rights
- A victim’s right to speak at parole and probation hearings
- Different types of protective orders and when to use each
- Practical legal advocacy and strategic litigation of victims’ rights in criminal cases
- Protecting victims’ rights in child pornography cases

National Professional Training Conference on Responding to Crime Victims with Disabilities
September 30, 2009 – October 2, 2009

The conference promotes collaborative strategies among and between disability and victim service providers, law enforcement, prosecutors, judges, disability support professionals, and all affiliated organizations and criminal justice professionals to better respond to crime victims with disabilities.

OVC also offers publications on this topic. The latest release is a training DVD and trainer’s guide: Victims with Disabilities: Collaborative, Multidisciplinary First Response (March 2009). This educational multimedia package not only provides guidelines for interacting with adult and adolescent victims of crime who have communication and/or intellectual disabilities, but also helps law enforcement personnel gain a deeper understanding of the lives, personal attributes, and abilities of individuals with disabilities. OVC Announces Release of New Online Ethics Curriculum
The new Office for Victims of Crime online Ethics in Victim Services Curriculum comprises six training modules that explore common ethical conflicts in victim services and how to apply ethical standards and decisionmaking to resolve them. It is designed to help supervisors and direct services staff who work in the field of victim services and have at least 2 years of experience to—
- Learn how attitudes and beliefs influence responses to victims of crime.
- Become familiar with and be able to apply the Standards for Victim Assistance Programs and Providers developed by the National Victim Assistance Standards Consortium.
- Recognize ethically questionable behavior.
- Employ standard decisionmaking processes when faced with an ethical dilemma.
Users can download module-specific curricula, create a customizable agenda, or download the full curriculum.

The next National Victim Assistance Academy (NVAA) will be held August 2–7, 2009, at the Seelbach Hilton Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky.

Take 25 To Honor National Missing Children’s Day
May 25, 2009, will mark the 27th annual National Missing Children's Day. Since 1983, the day has honored a nationwide commitment to help locate and recover missing children, and to remind adults to make child safety a priority.
In commemoration of National Missing Children’s Day, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), with funding and support from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, developed the Take 25 campaign to heighten awareness of children’s personal safety issues. With a focus on prevention, the campaign encourages parents, guardians, and other trusted-adult role models to spend time talking to kids and teaching them ways to be safer.

OVC Announces Release of New Victim Impact Curriculum
The Victim Impact: Listen and Learn curriculum uses a victim-centered approach to help facilitators in their efforts to make offenders more aware of the impact that crime has on victims, take responsibility for their actions, and begin to make amends.
This curriculum allows you to tailor your agenda to meet your training goals, and is built around 10 core crime topics:

OVC invites you to register now for The Ultimate Trainer, to be held February 10–12, 2009, in Denver, Colorado. This training workshop is designed for victim service providers and allied professionals who develop and deliver training, but do not have a formal background, to build the knowledge and practical skills necessary to plan, develop, implement, and evaluate quality training programs.
Attendees will learn to differentiate between traditional classroom teaching approaches and those that support adult learning; identify five principles of adult learning; describe auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learning styles; use a gap assessment table to help determine the learning needs of your training participants; develop a needs assessment plan for a training program of your choice; and much more!
